about

This track is the only “cover” on the album. It’s a Wynton Marsalis song, originally released on his album Standard Time Vol. 3: The Resolution of Romance. I had long wanted to record my own interpretation of this song, playing Wynton’s trumpet part on the harmonica. Some of New Orleans’ finest musicians played on this track, including the legendary drummer Johnny Vidacovich; Mike Hood, an amazingly talented pianist who learned the song that afternoon; and Jason Stewart, who was – at the time – the first-call bassist at the New Orleans jazz mecca, Snug Harbor. Jason often backed Ellis Marsalis, who played piano on his son’s original version of this song (a neat coincidence). The recording is a live take with no overdubs.

“In the Court of King Oliver” was recorded at Word of Mouth Studio in New Orleans exactly one month after I married my wife in the French Quarter, and exactly two months before New Orleans was decimated by Hurricane Katrina. It was an enormous privilege to be able to record my own version of one of my very favorite jazz songs in this city, at this time, with these musicians.
